Diamond Core Drills

By: Ben Needles

Diamond core drills are drills that are used to bore large holes in stone, brick, and concrete. For other materials, this type of a tool is generally not used. The tool has a bit that consists of a metal cylinder that is made of soft steel and mounted on an arbor. In the opening of the cylinder there are industrial diamonds embedded. The segments of diamonds are thicker than that of the cylinder wall, so the steel does not usually rub when the hole is begin bored. There are also sloping slots in the cylinder that help to carry out the dust being created while drilling.

You can use a diamond core drills with or without lubrication from water. This type of a drill can bore a hole through a single layer brick wall in less than a minute when the speed is about 300 rpm. The results of these types of drills leave a clean cut and are better than masonry drills. Masonry drills do not work as efficiently as diamond core drills because the masonry drill requires drilling a much larger hole than needed. Diamond core drills are also much more portable than a masonry drill.

The diameters available for diamond core drill bits range from 20 mm to 130 mm. The only thing that limits the drill is the length of the cylinder, which limits the depth of the hole. The need to remove the bit from the hole to clear any dust is common in a drill of this type. Shorter bits for a diamond core drill are uncommon, and cylinder lengths up to 300 mm are common for these types of drills. You can easily drill to depths much longer than the length of the bit by breaking the core off every once in awhile as well as using a shank extension when needed.

There are also a few disadvantages to using a diamond core drill bit. The portable drill needs to have the capacity to produce considerable amounts of torque at low speed. If you allow the drill to wander away from the central axis of the planned hole, you can bind the drill. You can also end up binding the drill with an excessive amount of dust. If you want to work in confined spaces, this diamond core drill may not be the proper tool for the job. Because of kick back from a drill this powerful, you can easily cause injury or destruction of what you are drilling. It is best to use a diamond core drill with two operators that work with two long side handles (one for each operator) in order to better work the machine properly.

You can use a diamond core drill with one operator if you are using a smaller bit in an open space. Many people find that diamond core drills are the best thing they can use to get a clean cut in brick, stone, and concrete.
