Industrial Lubricant (in brief Lube) is a substance that is used in two moving parts of machinery to reduce friction between them and to protect against rust and wear. Other functions of lube are to carry heat away from moving parts & components, separating moving parts, protecting against wear, preventing corrosion, etc. It also cools the moving parts by carry heat away. Generally, lube contains 90% of base oils and 10% of additives. Additives are used in lube for better performance of the machinery components. There are different types of lube for the different machinery and different specific purposes. But, remember the key function of each and every types of lubes remain same i.e. to reduce friction and cools down the moving part by carrying heat away for smooth running and longer life. Some popular forms of industrial lubricants are: Motor Oils One of the single largest applications of lubes is motor oil. It is a liquid lube that is used for lubrication of several internal combustion engines. It is used in motor vehicles and other machinery that is operated by motor powered equipments. Mainly it is derived from petroleum and consists of organic compounds. Prime functions of motors oils (also termed as the engine oils) are to reduce friction from moving parts & components, to carry away heat from moving components, to cool down moving parts & engines, to clean the engine and components, to inhibit corrosion, etc. Many motor oils also have additives to help keep the engine clean and reduce oil mire build-up. Gear Oils Gear oil is a special type of motor oil. It is basically used for transmission, transfer cases in gear boxes and gear systems of automobiles, trucks, and other powered machinery. It is used to enhance power and provide additional protection to heavily loaded gears. It makes enable gears to run smoothly by cooling and provides longer life. Coolants Also termed as heat transfer fluids, coolants are very useful form of industrial lube. As the name suggests it cools parts and components of machinery by carry heat away. It prevents machinery components from corrosion. Air and water are the most common forms of coolants. In fact, all industrial lubes can be termed as the names of coolants because they all have these features of cooling down heat of machinery components. Metalworking Fluids Metal working fluids some types also termed as cutting fluids or grinding fluids are very useful forms of industrial lubes that are used for lubrication of metal-shaping machine tools. Greases Grease is also a special type of industrial lube in semi-liquid form. Grease can be applied in automotive, agricultural and industrial tools. It is can be also used in steering, pulley, crane, gears, etc. Marine Lubes, turbine oils, transmission oils, forming oils, thermal fluids, rust preventives, rock drill oils, compressor oils, gas engine oils, slideway oils, hydraulic oils, etc are some other forms of industrial lubes used in various machinery and industries. Thus we see that the use of lubes in both small and large scale industries is very important to run machinery smoothly.
