The game known as Association Football, that is otherwise identified as soccer, or more generally football, is the sport with the most international support. The USA have a different national game also called football or American football that is quite different. They do play soccer as well, but with nothing like the passion they connect to their national style. Much effort has been made to increase the popularity of the international game in their country, so far they have not proved to be entirely successful, but it would be great if they teamed up with the rest of the world. People often underrate football, and the job of soccer players, but the sport requires continuous training. Therefore, professional footballers are popstars, and the best of them can earn wages and bonuses running up to millions of dollars per annum. Competition to attain the necessary competency is severe, but there are many examples of talented youngsters from poor surroundings, developing into top class footballers. It is a fact though, that those that do reach the top, to be paid the millions, are rare, and the big majority will end up as supporters. This wide appeal of football has resulted, not just from fans packing into massive stadiums through the ticket points, but also from TV exposure, where millions are paid for the financial benefit of televising matches. Since 1930 the most important prize, the world cup, has been won in almost equivalent measure by Latin American and European national teams. International soccer is a very, very, big enterprise. From gate money, to TV rights, sponsorships, to copy football gear, a vast sports business has been created. Small boys and grown men, and some girls and women, crave to wear the sports attire of their leading clubs or footballers. They kick a ball around in playgrounds, waste ground, and even quiet roads. Talented footballers are coming from many different continents including, Asia, Australia, and Africa. Not to forget the USA, helped by their staging of the world cup in 1994. Surprisingly, the Glazers of Tampa Bay fame, have acquired Manchester United, known as the worlds most wealthy soccer club. We can only begin to speculate on the collective worth of the best footballers, and the clubs they are contracted to play for. Young people, want to develop that added bit of skill, that will catapult them into fantastic wealth, and adulation. Many will settle for other things, but in rare instances a young soccer genius will surface, and daze the sporting world with a flair that could be richly remunerated, in the name of “The Beautiful Game”.
