You may have heard that horse racing is the Sport of Kings, but football, or soccer, is the King of Sports. The word soccer is derived from the phrase 'association football', and at least serves to distinguish the global game, from the totally different ballgame played in the USA. People have gathered together to boot a ball, or other spherical object about, for thousands of years. Rules for the game, as we now understand it, were decided in the United Kingdom, in the mid nineteenth century. Previous to this the game had a rather rough and violent reputation, to the extent that it was forebidden occasionally, by royalty. Soccer isn't a hard sport to understand, but in a match involving two opposing sides of eleven players there must be regulations. On the field a match is controlled by a referee, whose responsibility it is to guarantee the rules are observed, and that the laws of the game are properly executed. When infringements arise he has the power to make a range of judgements, the most serious of which is ordering a player off the field, often because of over aggressive or deliberately hazardous intent. The opposing squad then has the advantage of eleven players against ten, which often changes the result. There are assistant referees, who assist in deciding when a ball is outside the field of play, when players break the rules, and in other requirements. Football is a pastime that is a gigantic financial undertaking. Extremely rich individuals, from around the globe, have realized that soccer can be a tremendous speculation. They know it provides substantial dividends from gate money, television deals, and selling logo related clothing associated with football club action, including football jerseys and the like. Broadsheets and tabloids appear to have increasingly large segments related to sport, and soccer news, that include game results and reports, league positions, and other issues that must be good for circulation. International football has built up respect for all nations, but it has not been without a measure of difficulty, although the situation has greatly improved. Professionals of all races have become recognized because of their abilities, when they have been signed up by teams in other countries. The best players from Asia, Europe, South America, Australia, Africa the United States are instantly recognizable, and they are often on the move on the international circuit. Happily this has done much in breaking down narrow-minded racial attitudes. Not that long ago, boxing was one of the few sports, providing any way of escape, from hopeless destitution. Since that time football has created similar opportunities, and even though very few aspirants finish up as wealthy football players, they outnumber those who succeed as boxers. All over the world kids from deprived countries meet up for football training. One or two could make the grade as being exceptionally gifted, and may be rewarded with comfortable standards of living, to become pop stars, in their own right.
