The most widely accepted external parasite treatments currently available for pets are Frontline, Advantage, Revolution and Bio-Spot. These on-the-spot type treatments for dog and cat flea problems all provide one month of complete protection. Advantage flea treatment kills fleas very quickly. The active ingredient, imidaloprid, acts as a nerve agent that fries their entire nervous system. 98 to 100 percent of the fleas die within the first 12 hours of application. Brands like Frontline flea and Advantage flea killers have almost instant results and long lasting protection. Your pet should not be a victim of fleas when relief is readily available. All you need to do is choose the best dog or cat flea medication for your situation. External parasites that live off of the blood of mammals, reptiles, and birds are often referred to as mites and ticks. The American dog tick is arguably the best known of the five in North America. As far as disease transmission to humans goes, ticks come in at a frightening second place to mosquitoes. Everyone knows that Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness, but ticks also spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever, equine encephalitis, and ehrlichiosis. Additionally, they are responsible for transmitting livestock and pet diseases. Another type of mite living in the Rocky Mountains is the wood tick. Dog tick treatments include tick collars and dogs' flea/tick shampoos. Warm weather means an increase in the tick population and the need to monitor your dog for these parasites. When a tick is found it should be completely removed. If you are not careful, part of the tick may be left in the wound, increasing the likelihood of infection. Heartworms are life threatening internal parasites that are transmitted by mosquitoes. The parasites enter multiple steps before reaching maturity. Once mature, the heartworms move to the heart to survive off of the blood supply. This can cause symptoms including coughing, difficulty breathing, and ultimately heart failure. No owner would like to see their pet die of this terrible parasitic disease, fortunately treatment is available if the disease is caught early enough. One treatment available for dogs that also takes care of hookworms and ascarid infections is Interceptor. Kennel cough is yet another a common ailment for dogs. This is a very contagious strain of bronchitis that often spreads in places like kennels, where dogs are near many other dogs. Prevention is possible through vaccinating for canine adenovirus, distemper, parainfluenza, and bordetella and the infection itself treated with antibiotics.
