As the years pass, and families grow, so do their habits. This is particularly apparent during the holiday season. Though this time of year may be extremely busy and full of activites, some of them brand-new, most families have developed specific celebration routines which they follow, year after year. For most people, it's a bustling time of year, with extra parties and gatherings, a lot of shopping, and more cooking and eating than the rest of the year combined. So it's comforting for families to have their regular schedules for activities like decorating, caroling, or volunteer duties. The traditions that grow, each year, within a family, become the stuff of lasting memories. But there are always surprises. And some of them are hard to avoid, and some of them can challenge even the most traditional family's routine. Like that last-minute announcement that relatives will be visitng for Christmas, this year. Some families may actually be glad to hear the news that they'll be having guests for the holidays. But even the most congenial and welcome relatives will create a new paradigm in a family's Christmas routine. And, no matter what, that will add unneeded stress to the busy holiday season. But most families, regardless of how busy they are, can't say no, when the call comes from relatives who would like to visit. They just grin and welcome their guests with as much hospitality as they can muster, even though it will mean adjustments they weren't counting on having to make. Though Christmas is about family and fellowship, it's not inappropriate to inform potential visitors of your family's plans for celebrating the holidays. Let them know that when they stay in your home for Christmas, they may join your family in any of your traditions, but that your family won't alter the fundamental way it celebrates, because of your visitors. Relatives who visit can be a welcome addition to any family's Christmas celebration, as long as they respect the fact that their hosts have grown their own traditions together, traditions which enhance the family, their love, and the way they survive this busy and exciting time of year.
