How To Pick A Candle

By: Chris Channing...

Anyone with a respect for the finer points in life is going to be an admirer of candles. Candles help lighten up rooms, keep out odors, and can even be used in aromatherapy to relax one's nerves. Technology has changed the traditional candle, however, and we are now seeing some very impressive candle designs.

Most would assume that the cotton wick that most candles sport isn't going to change. In many respects it hasn't- but a new trend is to use wooden wicks instead of the cotton types. Wooden wicks will have a more pleasant scent all of their own. Wooden wicks will also burn higher than a cotton wick, making for a more immediate scent.

The wax that candles have is also being replaced by liquid agents. Instead of the wax keeping the wick from burning too quickly, specially designed oils and canisters are available to supplement the wax with a liquid. The liquid is friendly to the flame, but also doesn't ignite to the level of burning one's home down. It's a nice change from the norm, but can be messy.

Candles often mix in different elements of technology and old design. Like the oil candles mentioned previously, some candles are now simply able to float in oil and burn. This can give them motion, as well as light up the room in interesting ways. It makes a stationary and boring candle come alive with a mind of its own.

Aromatherapy is another health technology that is being implemented into candles. Studies show that those who breathe in certain scents will be at less risk to have high stress. And with lower stress comes a wide array of health benefits, such as lower cholesterol, less risk in some types of disease, and a better immune system.

Of course not every candle has to be bought already made! Candle making kits are wonderful for young kids to learn how to make candles and have fun in the process. Candle making kits are generally inexpensive, and can even be used to teach one the intricacies of the candle business, and perhaps start a very prominent future in making new and exciting candles of all flavors and scents. Even if just for fun, one can help teach themselves or younger kids responsibility and skill all at the same time.

In Conclusion

Getting the "look" and feel of a home just right is going to be a tough job. The proper decorator at heart should already know that any kind of candle is going to make a home more friendly and homely looking.
