How Water Damage Affects Your Roof In Orlando

By: Richard Barthallo

Most people in Orlando don't have a reason to get on top of the roof often so we don't know or think about the condition the roof is in. It is the first thing that receives all the weather that comes our way. Rain, sleet, snow, high winds and scorching heat all play a part in how long a roof will stay in good condition. If you have had a problem with a roof that leaks, then you might know that it can eventually cause extensive damage that can be very costly to repair. For this reason it is vital that every Orlando homeowner schedule time to look at the condition of their roof.

A bad roof and its problems will usually begin with loose shingles somewhere. As most people} do not regularly get up on, loose shingles are not always noticed as soon as they should be. They do not necessarily have to be flopping in the wind for water damage to start to take place. Anytime shingles are loose, they can allow rain or snow to seep in behind them. Once this seepage gets started, the wind will help to make them to become even more loose and even more water can get in behind them. If the water only affected the shingles this would not be too big of a problem. Unfortunately become looser and looser until the water makes contact with the wooden sheets underneath the shingles. This is when the problems with water damage can start. If this issue is let go for long the ensuing water damage could be severe and very costly.

When the shingles are missing or loose enough to let water to come in contact with the plywood beneath the wood will definitely be affected. Wood that becomes wet on a regular basis from rain or snow that sometimes lays on top of the house for days on end, eventually begins to rot. When this happens in Orlando it can only take a year or two at the most for a whole large area of the roof to become affected. The wetness spreads across the wood under the shingles making a greater and greater area to get wet. If the water is getting down into the wood in your attic, this only makes the rotting problem even worse. It can affect the big cross joists of the attic as well as ruin things that you have stored up there if the problem is left alone.

To save a lot of time, energy, and most of all money, make sure your roof is inspected at least once a year. This way you are likely to catch problems before they can become serious, saving thousands of dollars in repairs. Inspect closely around chimneys, skylights, and pipes extending from the roof because these are common places where leaks begin. These are the most likely places for shingles and adhesives to come loose.
