Is Beauty Subjective? Or Does The Society Define It?

The latest advertisements are trying to focus not on selling, but more on telling and warning parents just how dangerous the competitor's advertisements are for their children, especially daughters. Take for example, Dove's 'True Beauty' campaign.

The crux is of the matter is the definition of beauty and how the current warped view presented by the media through advertisements is resulting in negative effects and views that will prove to be our own undoing.

There are essentially three existing ideas on this issue:

1. Society's ideas change and so does the concept of beauty - This view has three debatable points:

a. What is the source of the change? If it is a small group of people claiming something specific, then this is no different than racism. This is exactly the view that majority of the media outlets endorse and believe in.

b. A side effect of this issue is that if the media labels something destructive as 'cool', and 'in', then it becomes desirable. A result of this is the rapid increase in depression, unhealthily habits, and even suicide.

c. The issue is not as much beauty, but what is desirable that this idea promotes. When a scantily clad woman with no morals or brains appears on the screen, the message being sent is not about beauty, but rather about self-worth.

2. The beauty concepts are the same as before, but now open to exploitation due to increase in technology - Let's evaluate this one:

a. Who is making this public? A small number of people claiming that what they possess is beautiful is a supremacist attitude that is not grounded in truth, but rather in who has the most 'say'.

b. If the concept of beauty has always been the same, then why are 'impossible' and unhealthy figures that have never been considered normal or beautiful until now being peddled as such today?

c. There are small aspects of this that are true - such as wrinkles, and skin blemishes have always been regarded as not ideal. However, applying this very limited concept to everything across the board is a fallacy.

3. Subjective opinion of each individual - This is currently regarded to be the best possible explanation. Following are the discussion points related to this.

Each individual desires to be 'more beautiful', but this concept is driven not by their own innate understanding of what that means, but rather by what they perceive is desirable in the sight of those whom they hold important in their life. This is viewed most clearly in a marriage where the husband and wife adopt the model of beauty that their spouse deems the most desirable.

Hence, it is perfectly reasonable to seek to fight the natural enemies of 'good' appearance such as wrinkles and blemishes through safe and healthy means. However, to place this in a position where it dictates one's life to the full is simply unacceptable.
