Learning to be an affiliate marketer

By: John Aaron

There is money to be made being an affiliate marketer. This is because companies find affiliate marketing an effective and relatively cheap way to market their products. Companies pay only when a sale is made, rather than pay thousands upfront for advertising that may not result in any sales, or which only achieve meager results.

An individual need to be dedicated to being an affiliate marketer if he or she is to succeed at it.It’s not easy to start, because quite often a person doesn’t know how to start, and even after having started, failure still looms large because of the lack of follow through.

But if a person, starting from scratch, is willing to put in the time and effort to being an affiliate marketer then the following plan would be a good one to follow:-

Step 1: Decide on following just one program

Decide on which program to use. Some of the more prominent ones are Clickbank,eBay,Commission Junction , Amazon.

Step 2: Two ways to advertise

There are two ways to attract people to your website – the first is where you pay hardly anything, and the second is to pay for advertisements to attract people to come.

In the first method, a person normally just submits articles (with a link to your site placed at the bottom of the article) to sites like Ezine . Hopefully people after reading your article will go to your site ,see what is being sold there, then either buy or leave.

In the second method, one pays for advertising services to get your site popular. This method is costlier than the first, but it could yield better results.

For a person running on a tight budget, the first would be the preferred method.

Step 3: Have a Web Site

Have your own website. It is relatively cheap. Domain names and website hosting can be had for as little as $7 a year and $8 a month respectively depending on the plan. An ordinary looking website is good enough just so long as it contains information relevant to the product being promoted. If a particular market niche is targetted,it is preferable to have a domain name, and website containing information relating to the niche. Bear in mind that the objective is to have your website ranked high on search engines like Google.

Step 4: Promoting the Web Site

After the above steps are done,ie domain is purchased, website built, and method decided, it comes time to promote the website and thereby the product. A good idea would be to submit the website to as many different website directories, using either or both methods mentioned in Step 2 above. The idea is to drive traffic or visitors to the website.

Step 5: Keep it updated to maintain interest.

You’ll need to keep the content of your website updated, so that it doesn’t get the appearance and feel of being moldy. An unchanging website would soon cause people to lose interest and move on to some other more interesting sites. So, to maintain interest, which would translate into visitors repeatedly returning to look at your site, and hopefully eventually to buy something, your website need to be updated frequently.
