If you have a business and want to accept credit cards, debit cards, gift cards, visa cards, master cards, smart cards, etc, you must have a merchant account (MA) provided by a financial institution or a bank. From small retail shop to big departmental store, from a restaurant to a hotel, all business that accept credit cards and other forms of electronic payment transactions have their own merchant account. Without have a MA, any business cannot accept plastic moneys. Before establishing an MA or choosing a MA provider for your business you must understand well about what exactly an MA. An MA is the way for credit card processing. An MA makes enable you to accept credit cards and sometimes other forms of electronic payments from your customers. When a customer use credit card to purchase your products and services, the card is swiped through credit card machine and then payments are deposited into your bank account. In order to get established a MA you need to find a right MA provider and fill out an application and have it approved. Some banks also provide merchant services account. But, it is not best option to go with a bank to establish a MA for your business because a bank doesn’t itself provides services, if fact, outsource to a MA provider. So, it is better option to go directly with a MA provider. Once you are approved for a MA to your business, you have three options for credit card processing or payment transactions. The first one is using credit card terminals (also known as point of sale – POS terminals), second one is processing software (also termed as point of sale – POS software) and the third one is an internet processing system or internet payment gateways. Decide one of these three options. Now you need to program your MA into the pos terminals or pos software and then you will be able to accept electronic payment transactions. Now you can ready for payment and transactions processing. It the transaction is approved, the amount of transaction is credited to your MA. If the transaction is not approved, the amount will be credited to your MA. At the end of the day, the total amounts in your MA are transferred to your bank account. Generally, the process takes two business days. In order to have an MA, some service providers require setting up a bank account with their bank. But it is not necessary. There are also some merchant services providers who don’t need such condition and allow you to go with bank wherever you want. It is always more beneficial to go with that merchant service provider that allows you to set up bank account within your locality. Remember, bank account is totally different from a merchant account. At last, one thing more, before going with a MA provider you should understand each and everything like fees & costs, rules & regulation, processes, etc. You should always go with a MA provider that meets your business and have proven former records.
