When buying flowers from a florist, it can sometimes be difficult to find flowers for the average mum. There is a lot of elegant and luxury flowers, such as orchids and roses, and then a great deal of wild and exciting mixes of bright and exotic flowers. However sometimes it is tricky to find a middle ground of modern flowers that do not look eccentric or too traditional. A good way to counter the problem is by choosing a selection of flowers which include a mix of old and new, such as mixing a small amount of roses in with more contemporary flowers and foliage. This helps to create a contrast between the two extremes, bringing about a happy middle ground. Another great way to find the perfect flower arrangement in a modern style is to choose traditional flowers in more unusual and distinctive colours, tones and styles. A bouquet of cream and peach roses has all the elegance of pink roses, yet has a up to date feeling that is makes a refreshing new take on an old look. Or you can go the other way and choose more exotic or trendy flowers in subdued or darker tones. This is especially effective when mixing them with greater than normal amounts of greenery and foliage. By not dominating the bouquet with exotic flowers you are allowing the subtle unusual looks of these flowers to shine through without being overbearing. If you truly wish for a contemporary look then avoid brighter colours such as intense reds and yellows. Instead choose darker shades such as amber or crimson. These colours are more subdued and allow you to include the colours your mother will love without presenting her with a bright and garish bouquet of flowers. As usual the opposite is also true, with darker shades bringing about feelings of other more formal flowers. Deep blues, velvety purples and maroon are all too dark in most cases, and should be avoided. Instead choose colours such as peaches, lavenders, pale blues and pinks. One of the best looking contemporary flowers is freesias. With slightly paler than normal shades, and a mixture of colours, freesias are attractive flowers with a sweet smelling fragrance. Presented in a glass vase these are a great gift for a busy mum, as there is no need to worry about cutting, arranging or even finding a container for them. Tulips are another great flower that is available in either traditional or modern styles. There is an increasing number of two or even three coloured tulips, with different colour outer petals to the inner area. This allows for unusual designs, some of which are even made to look like flags such as Irelands or striking combinations such as pink and bright yellow. Modern floral displays are a great gift for mums of any age, from young mums who want a more contemporary look to elderly mums who fancy something a bit more modern and up to date.
