The secret to having your sweets and dieting to.

By: Scott Nelson

Sugar Candy or hard candy is a favorite of all small children as well as many grown ups. We like to call these loyal lifetime candy connoisseurs, the "Mob". Let me tell you that hard candy is so universally popular, that you would be hard pressed to find one Mob member who doesn't enjoy at least one flavor or type.

The famous sugar candy aka "hard candy" in all its thousands and thousands of glorious forms, is made from thick solution of sugar water which is then made tasty and attractive by adding various flavors and colors. In many countries, these candies are sometimes made into ice pop candies by freezing them. (That is not as common in the US but it sure needs to be!!)

The actual widely used term "candy" covers a wide term which includes chocolates, toffees, chocolate based candy bars, chewing gums, liquorice and anything else that you can think of which tastes good and sweet. Many people traditionally refer to candy as confectionery or sweets.

Not that we mob members care about any of that. We love the way it tastes and we all have our favorites and we all try not to feel so guilty for loving it so much.

So try this on for size. Believe it or not, not all sweets are created equal for the weight conscious member of the world wide candy loving mob. For instance think about the classic favorite the lollipop.

A lollipop is referred to as a sugar candy with a stick. As compared to a rich milk chocolate candy bar, a sugar free or low-sugar lollipop or hard candy is much sounder choice if you are trying to maintain a certain weight.

The major reason for this is that a desert with hard candy is overall much less total food. Still, your sweet tooth is satisfied. Consider the tried and true Dum Dum lollipop has experienced consistently awesome sales for years. Dum Dums or any of its many relatives can be made during the creation process to lessen sugar load without compromising taste. Standing alone a lollipop does have it's share of sugar, but its overall calorie load is limited to it's size.
