In this day and age of information, we struggle to cram our brains with all the information that we can. Still we often can't seem to unlock the more than 70% of our brain's capacity that we don't use. And people are making fantastic claims every day- claims that we can have wealth, happiness, fulfilling love, and abundance. And we can have this just by choosing that we want it, and using our brains more effectively. I have been around the block a bit when it comes to tools to work with my mind. I have done yoga, meditations, and body-mind-spirit practices where I go in the body to access the mind. I have read Louise Haye Affirmation books and cards daily. I have attended 12-step programs and read wonderful books to instill new and positive ideas and thoughts into my brain. I have attempted, with some good success through all of these methods, to reframe the very thoughts in my head. It is the age of enlightenment. People speak all of the time about mind over matter and ways to increase your mental power. A lot of us believe in that. I know I do. But many of us also ask ourselves... "How do I actually do that?" Or even more to the point, "Can I actually do that?" And a lot of us have been working on just that skill for a lot of years. And we seem so far from our goals- even despite the fact that we human beings have a hard time acknowledging our successes. My experiences with 'mind over matter' have included some life-changing things- such as a course called The Landmark Forum- where you delve into the very question of what it means to be human. I have looked at myself as a human being, and how my very self was created at a young age. I have dissected the process so that I could shift my way of being to become all that I want to be. In this process I have looked at the very way my brain operates, which sometimes empowers me but very often dis-empowers me. You could think of your mind like a 'answers machine.' You could consider that when you put information in, an answer comes out. Now the answer is not always a pleasant one. In fact very often what goes in the machine to form the mind's answer is flawed material. The mind picks out the traumas, painful occurrences, and scarred experiences of life to form an answer for. In essence, the mind does not choose the day-to-day grind to worry about. It only picks the incidents that stand out- hence the answer is based on only one incident out of many- and so flawed. The mind then makes note of what should be done to address this problem. This is quite often in the form of a negative thought such as "Don't trust anyone." Some of these thoughts become such a part of us, we can't even see them. One has to wonder if the mind truly can speak to the very cells in your body. One has to wonder if the claims people make about the mind's power to cure all manner of diseases are really true. Can the mind cause you to lose weight effortlessly? Can you become a master at some unknown task overnight. Is it perhaps true that faith- your faith in your mind's ability- can move mountains. If we believe, can we accomplish a miracle? And truly, this level of believing itself seems to be a miracle. How would it be, I wonder, if we could skip over the hard work of constant bathroom affirmations, cards, and readers? What would it be like to just lay there and listen to a tape or CD- then fall to sleep and allow the magic to work on you the next day and into the future. Experts say this method, called brain entrainment, is entirely possible- and even works very well. I am also told does not involve any scary 'subliminal messages.' This is such a fascination for me- this thought that I really can train my brain without working so hard- that I am inclined to try this method and let you know how it works. Until then, my task as I look at brain entrainment, seems to be one and only one thing to keep doing it, plugging away at a steady pace, for a few minutes a day, every day. This may very well be the key that has me permanently increase mental power- no matter which methodology I choose.
